Decoupage, in French meaning "cutting out", is the art of cutting and pasting cutouts to simulate painting on a wood, metal, or glass surface and applying several, sometimes numerous, thin coats of varnish or lacquer to the pictures.

Originating in France in the 17th century, decoupage decorated bookcases, cabinets, and other pieces of furniture with graceful, charming, and colorful designs.
