APRICOT

PRUNUS ARMENIACA

Pliny and Columella mentioned it in the first century AD under the name of Armeniaca implying its introduction from Armenia Major to Italy. The Arabs later cultivated it through the Mediterranean region, and it has been grown in English gardens since the fifteenth century, and possibly before.

The apricot was and still is today in the Mediterranean regions a gift of friendship.(I still remember when my mother was to prepare little baskets with 5 or 7 apricots- never an even number- for me to bring to our neighbors every summer, it seemed a ritual).

(our painting on this basket is after Redoute's illustrations)

Papier Mache Basket. The background color is mottled hunters green.
It measures:11"X7 1/4"X11 1/2"H.
