MAN'S BEST FRIEND COLLECTION

Gifted with seemingly boundless reserves of energy, the Boxer is one of the canine world's great characters. The breed only became well known in Britain and the US after World War II, but since then has gained enormous popularity both as a family pet and guard dog. The Boxer's main ancestors were two German dogs of the Mastiff type -- The Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer -- that were used in the Middle Ages for bull-baiting and hunting boar and deer. In the nineteenth century there were crossed with other breeds, particularly the Bulldog, to create the Boxer. Despite its German origins, "Boxer" is an English name that aptly describes the dog's punchy fighting style.
