JACK RUSSELL TERRIEROne of the Church of England's "hunting parson's, the Reverend Jack Russell of Devon established the breed in the early nineteenth century, and also gave it his name. The Reverend was a keen fox hunter, and needed a nippy dog with plenty of fighting spirit that could keep up with the hounds, and gave the courage to face up to its quarry underground. When not pursuing foxes, the Jack Russell was quite happy to perform as a specialist exterminator of vermin. Character has always been the most important ingredient of the breed, so its physical appearance has tended to vary quite widely.
