STUBBS KING CHARLES SPANIELThe King Charles Spaniel or toy spaniel had been a pet of the rich for many years. The breed was only one of many which King Charles II kept and also frequently lost; at least two advertisements seeking the return of lost or stolen appeared in journals. While many in Stubbs' remained solely as pets, other were being selected and bred to evolve into a more athletic cocker spaniel.Fanny, with her rather thick neck and middle-aged spread belonged to Sophia Musters and also appeared in the portrait of Sophia by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
