Stubbs Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The King Charles Spaniel or toy spaniel had been a pet of royal and the privileged for many years.   The breed was only one of many which King Charles II kept and also frequently lost; at least two advertisements seeking the return of lost or stolen appeared in journals.   While many in Stubbs' day remained solely as pets, others were being selected and bred to evolve into a more athletic cocker spaniel.   Fanny, with her rather thick neck and middle-aged spread belonged to Sophia Musters and also appeared in the portrait of Sophia by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
